The Science Behind It 🔬

Milk contains fat molecules scattered throughout the liquid. Dish soap is a surfactant — it breaks apart fat molecules. When the soap touches the milk, it races outward breaking up fat molecules throughout the plate. This rapid movement pushes the food coloring along with it, creating the swirling explosion of color. The reaction continues until all the fat in the milk has been broken apart by the soap. Whole milk has more fat than skim milk, so it creates a much more dramatic effect! Engineers apply this knowledge to build everything from spacecraft to medical devices.
